NiAlMo coating impact on aluminum alloy surface properties

Abstract

This article explores the effects of NiAlMo coating on aluminum alloy (Al-Si). The limited hardness, inadequate wear resistance, and poor corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys restrict their broader application across various industries. The use of surface protective coatings can significantly enhance hardness and wear resistance. Plasma spraying technologies are widely utilized to improve surface properties. The results show that Vickers microhardness increased significantly from 103.7 to 347 Hv due to the application of the NiAlMo coating. Additionally, the wear rate decreased, and the scratch lines became notably finer. The coating layer acts as a barrier against oxygen penetration throughout its thickness, whereas the uncoated sample exhibited weight gain due to surface oxidation after being exposed to a furnace environment at 350°C for 50 hours.
