Engineering Innovations from 5ICGE & 3ICESE Conferences
Following two landmark events in Iraq’s engineering research community — the Fifth International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering (5ICGE) and the Third International Conference on Engineering Science & Energy (3ICESE) — the journal of Research on Engineering Structures and Materials (RESM) is collaborating with the conference organizers to extend the impact of the valuable work presented.
Held from 1–3 July 2025 at Komar University, Sulymaniyah, Iraq, these conferences were jointly organized by the Iraqi Scientific Geotechnical Society (ISGS) and the International Center for Science and Engineering (IRUCS–Engineering). The gatherings united experts from academia and industry to explore state-of-the-art developments in geotechnical and structural engineering, energy systems, water resources, environmental engineering, and infrastructure design.
To further disseminate the high-quality research presented at these meetings, selected papers from the proceedings will be invited for submission to RESM. The extended versions will undergo a peer review in accordance with the journal’s editorial standards before publication in this Special Focus Issue. This initiative aims to ensure that the knowledge shared during the conferences continues to inspire future research and strengthen international collaboration in engineering and applied sciences.
This special focus issue reflects a continued effort to bridge conference research and peer-reviewed publication, providing greater visibility for the innovative work emerging from these international collaborations.

Prof. Dr. Mahdi Karkush is an accomplished academic and researcher in civil and geotechnical engineering with extensive experience in soil mechanics, foundation design, and infrastructure development. His expertise in regional and international collaborations plays a key role in advancing the dissemination of the research outcomes from the 5ICGE & 3ICESE conferences through this special issue.
