Special Focus Issue on Smart Routing for Dynamic Sensor Networks

Research on Engineering Structures and Materials (RESM) is pleased to announce an upcoming Special Focus Issue dedicated to the latest advancements in adaptive routing protocols and self-organizing strategies for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) operating in volatile and dynamic environments.

Overview

With rapid developments in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and wireless technologies, WSNs have become vital components across critical applications—including structural health monitoring, industrial automation, traffic control, military sensing, and smart agriculture. However, deploying sensors in dynamic, unpredictable, or hostile environments poses significant hurdles in terms of energy constraints, scalability, latency, and data security.

This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners to share state-of-the-art developments in adaptive routing algorithms, intelligent optimization, and cross-layer designs. By integrating technologies like machine learning, edge computing, and blockchain, this issue seeks to explore how next-generation WSNs can achieve the resilience, flexibility, and autonomy required for demanding real-world applications.

Scope and Topics

The Special Issue welcomes original research articles, review papers, case studies, and application-oriented contributions. Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Adaptive trust-based routing in WSNs with blockchain-enabled consensus

  • Learning-driven and reinforcement learning routing optimization for resource-limited networks

  • Swarm intelligence and bio-inspired neural networks for energy-aware routing

  • Quantum-inspired algorithms for secure and efficient routing in next-gen networks

  • Real-time edge, fog, and IoT-integrated system architectures for adaptive data transfer

  • Self-healing and digital twin modeling in dynamic WSN topologies

  • Long-range networking using LoRaWAN and UAV-assisted sensor relays

  • Cognitive radio-based dynamic routing to mitigate congestion

  • Lightweight intrusion-resilient routing and homomorphic encryption in WSNs
